George HALSTEAD (1813-1881)

Whilst checking out the marriages in the Cheshire Collection on www.findmypast.co.uk I found the marriage of George HALSTEAD (1813-1881) to Nancy WARDLOW (1819-1881) in the Parish Church of Mottram-in-Longdendale. As the marriage was on 6 June 1838 it gave me his father's name of Richard HALSTEAD, a Manager to a Calico Printer.

This information enabled me to find Richard in the database as he is Richard HALSTEAD (1788-1860) with his wife Ann.

George was the progenetor of Chart 25 and therefore this chart has been taken back a further generation.

The details will be included on the next website update

  1. Very interesting. This is 'my' ancestral line. Richard Halstead on the 1841 census states his bithplace as 'county' ( same county - i.e. Cheshire) but on the 1851 census, confusingly, gives 'Liverpool'. I have recently discovered that all of Richard and Ann Halstead's children except George received DOUBLE BAPTISMS, that is, they were firsly baptised in Mottram, Cheshire and then - sometimes a year later, at Manchester Cathedral. There is no record of George Halstead's baptism in Mottram but there is a baptism record in Manchester Cathedral of a George Halstead, son of Richard and Ann, 7th August 1812, stating his birth date as 27th June 1811. The word 'illegitimate' is faintly written there, which is puzzling. In 1810, 15th February, there is a Manchester Cathedral marriage of a Richard Halstead - printer - and Ann Normansell. Maybe this is the wrong line
? How can I find out?

  2. By the way, if anyone tries to find that Richard Halstead / Ann Normansell 1810 Manchester Cathedral marriage on Ancestry.co.uk, 'beware'! The transcription is very inaccurate: Ann's surname is transribed as 'HOGMAN'! see
