The last version of the Halstead website has now been loaded.

This includes the deails posted in the blog entries before Christmas as well as almost all the marriages in the West Yorkshire Archievs material on Ancestry (Well almost all - I have completed 1837-1892 and 1901-1920)

I had the opportunity at the beginning of last November to visit the archives in Preston and managed in the space of a day and a quarter to photograph some 150+ Lanceashire marriages. These will be the next to be added to the database.

Mind no sooner does one get near to the end of one list than a new source becomes available - this time it was the announcement just before Christmas of the release of the British Newspaper Archive. This looks like a very useful source to provide lots of background information - however there are over 40,000 entries with links to the Halstead name and its variants. So watch this space!

Richard was born in Stainland and married Martha, born in Longwood, on the 4 March 1821 at St Mary, Elland. They had 7 children

Whilst starting to add the details of the marriage certificates for 1881 that I have I noticed that there was another large family group in Lancashire.

They are the descendants of Richard HALSTEAD (1792-1846) born somewhere in Lancashire (One of those annoying people who died before the 1851 census) and his wife Betty ? (1792-?). So far I have not been able to track Betty's date of death.

They had 9 children - the website current has only 8

Last Saturday (12th November) I was lecturing at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and stayed with an old friend Peter Park. Whilst it has been a trip planed for some time it had not been thought possible to visit the archives as it had been closed for a while and not due to re-open till the end of the year. Two weeks ago I learnt that it was opening early.

I therefore went up to Preston earlier in the week and spent a day and a half in the records office. It gave me a chance to get the digital images of another 200 marriages from the Preston area, many of these are post 1910 and some as late as the 1950s. So yet more marriages to be transcribed and added to the database.

The latest version of the Halstead now includes the marriages from the West Yorkshire Archives on Ancestry from 1837 to 1873 and those from 1901 onwards as mentioned back in August.

A new chart Yorkshire chart 39 has been added with the details of the descendants Thomas HALSTEAD and his wife Alice NORMINGTON. They married at St Peter's, Leeds, Yorkshire on 15th April 1782 and over the next 24 years had 9 children - Mary, John, Titus, Robert, Richard William, Betty, Squire and Alice - all being baptised in Ripponden. So far two of these John HALSTEAD (1785-bef 1861) and Squire HALSTEAD (1802-1877) have been identified in the database but I am sure that evidence will eventually come to light to link the others. one of the problems with these names is that they are so common in HALSTEAD families and especially in that area.

I am already up to 1876 with the West Yorkshire marriages and had hoped to go onto the baptisms and burials but Ancestry have just released the parish records for Warwickshire and Dorset as well as findmypast.co.uk releasing details from the Manchester City Council's Libraries, Information and Archives and the parish records for Cheshire. so more marriage to go through as these at the present time seem to be linking more of the database together.

The Cheesman's of Sussex

I have been contacted by John MOON whose Great Great Grandfather was Roger CHEESMAN and is descended from his first wife Phillis.

This has enabled me to expland on the details of Roger - it is interesting that most of his children from the second marriage to Mary Ann HALSTED appear to have died without marrying.

Perhaps I should make a point here that the research into the Halstead name and its variants doesn't stop when a woman marries out of the name neither does it only start when she marries into the Halstead name. It is just that we don't make a point of normally actively chasing it - if the information it offered it will be added

Since the last update I have included the full details of all marriages that I have the certificates for from 1856 to 1862 as well as updating the full details on these families at the same time.

In processing the marriages for 1861 for the West Yorkshire Archives on Ancestry I came across the marriage of John MARSH to Martha HOLSTEAD. The interesting thing with this marriage was the names of the witnesses as being Joshua HALSTEAD and Sarah Jane HALSTEAD. It just goes to show that it make sense to take notice of them.

Now Joshua HALSTEAD is not a common name in the HALSTEAD world and I knew that there was one in my brickwalls. This marriage is in Penistone the same village that Joshua's children Arthur Frederick (b1860) and Ada Josephine (b1862) were born. Joshua's father was a John HALSTEAD and Martha father was also a John HALSTEAD. Too much of a coincidence for me.

So a 10 year brickwall finally bits the dust.

As well as the addition of the marriages some 60% of the online charts have been amended in one way or another

Website update

The latest release of the Halsted Research website has been released. This includes a large number of updates. It would have been released earlier had it not been for the fact that Ancestry UK released the baptisms, marriages and deaths from the West Yorkshire Records Office.

So this update includes:-
The full details of over 580 marriages that I have the certificates for have been added together with links to the "Certificates we have" page. There is a page on the website that has details of these as well as the birth and death certificates we hold copies of. There are lots more certificates to add but at present all the certificates from 1837 to 1855 and 1901-1921 are on line. I have also added on that page the details of the marriage certificates from the 1830-1837 that I have (these are all from the West Yorkshire area).

As with all family history you get certificates that you can't identify were they site in the family tree and a one-name study of this size is no exception. I have therefore added a new page to the site entitle "Unresolved marriages post 1837" If you can help to identify these people then I would be delighted to hear from you.

I complete refresh of all 37 charts - unfortunately none of them yet have been taken any further back but one of these days!.

The Plans for the next update including adding the certifactes for the period 1856-1900

The latest website update has been uploaded.

This includes a major new addition with start the details of certificates that I hold. So far the details of the births and deaths have been added.

I hold 217 birth certficates and 60 death certficiates

The family tree of James Halstead and Elizabeth LEAVER

As an addition to the blog of the 24th March 2011 about the family tree of James Halstead and Elizabeth LEAVER I discover yet another family that can be linked into the tree.

This is the family of William HALSTEAD and Alice LANCASTER who currently appear as the progenators of Lacnashire Chart 6. They will be incorporated into Chart 10 and chart 6 will be removed.

This brings the total number of people in chart 10 to over 500.

The family tree of James Halstead and Elizabeth LEAVER

Whilst investigating another family I discovered a granddaughter Deborah SHACKLETON. Investigating in the family trees in Ancestry I found Deborah and the tree on Ancestry gave me the information to be able to take the tree of James HALSTEAD (1818-1878) back a further two generations as well as linking many other families into the overall tree.

James is currently shown as the head of chart 10. The head of this chart now becomes William HALSTEAD (1750-1840). William married Agnes SAGER in 1773 and their known children are John, James and Peggy HALSTEAD

The revised chart 10 now has 250+ people and will be included in the next website update

Work has been carried out of the tree of Thomas HALSTEAD (1807-1874) of Wiswell, Lancashire and his wife Martha ? (1808-1883) of Accrington. They married prior to 1829 and had 11children:-

Work has been done on yet another extensive Yorkshire branch of the Halsteads.

This time it is the descendants of John Halstead (1794-1850) and his wife Fanny ? (1797-1871). They had 11 children

Ben HALSTEAD (1826-1875) married Jane WOOD (1831-?). Following Ben's death Jane appears on the 1881 census with her children Fred, Albert, Herman, Mary, Rachel and Ellen and then they emigrated to Ontario, Canada where they can be found.

Another Halstead Chart

Whilst sorting out the database following a query from Jenny Noake's on her Great Grandmother Emma Lavinia HALSTEAD who she has born in 1844. Extensive work has been done on the family of William HALSTEAD (1788-1861) and Rachel ? (1791-1864) but it trnaspires from a copy of her tree that she has sent that these aren't the right parents.

This is one of those instances where a census return can really help to resolve a family with similar childrens names and those of the parents. The correct Great Great Grandfather is still William HALSTEAD (1788-1861) but his wife is Rachel ? (1791-1864). Their daughter - again Emma Lavinia - is married to Tom NETHERWOOD and the couple are living with her parents in the 1881 census.

More Cumberland HOLSTEADs

Since the last blog on 2nd December 2001 "The Descendants of Angus HALSTEAD (1860-1949) and Elizabeth Mary ENGLISH (1862-1929)" I have been looking more closely at the Holstead/Halstead links in Cumberland and tidying them up. This has enabled a number of trees to be linked and has also resulted in two more charts being added to the Cumberland Charts.

Chart 17 covers the descendants of Thomas HALSTEAD (1769-1842) and his wife Ann THIRWELL (1795-1854). Thomas is new to the database.

Chart 18 covers the descendants of Henry HOLSTEAD (c1780-) and his wife Sarah BROWN (c1780-) both Henry and Sarah are new to the dabatase but were married at St Mary, Carlisle on 4 August 1805

Both charts and the detials of these people and their descendants will be included in the next website update at Christmas.

The Descendants of Angus HALSTEAD (1860-1949) and Elizabeth Mary ENGLISH (1862-1929)

A recent meeting with an old friend Barny TYRWHITT-DRAKE gave me a chance to ask him about a mutual HALSTEAD connection

I was aware of a marriage in Jerusalem in 1945 from the Non-UK indexes of births, marriages and deaths of a William H HALSTEAD and a TYRWHITT-DRAKE but had not yet had the time to research it further. It turns out that the TYRWHITT-DRAKE in question was Dorothy Joy TYRWHITT-DRAKE, born in 1917 and still alive and Barny's aunt.

The information he supplied has enabled me to get the marriage certificate for William HALSTEAD and Rhoda Margaret WILLS - the parents of the William Herbert HALSTEAD mentioned. William was in the Army Veternary Corps at the time of his marriage in 1915 and serving in France. However I have so far been unable to find his service record online. It looks like this may be amongst the burnt documents. It could also explain why there is no trace of him so far in the 1911 census.

This has enabled the Cumberland tree of John HOLSTEAD and Mary PAPE to be extended and a revised version together with the information supplied by Barny will be included in the next website update.

The descendants of James Halstead (1812-1870) and Jane Holden (1814-1889)

I was recently contacted by Andrew Halstead initially because I had the date of death of his grandfather James Thomas HALSTEAD (who was himself the grandson of James HALSTEAD (1812-1870)).

The initial email also contain the details of the James Thomas HALSTEAD's family from his marriage to Edith LANCASTER. Now whist that email had the dates for the four children it contained no places of birth and I could not find them in the GRO indexes.

Ethel HALSTEAD (1909-1998) married William Herber HEYWOOD (1905-1978)
Ernest Taylor HALSTEAD (1912-1998) married Ruby Esther TUNSTALL (1916-?)
Jean HALSTEAD (1915-?) married John Edgar HUMPHREY (1912-2009)
James Lancaster HALSTEAD (1917-1941)

It transpires that all four children were born in South Africa, where James Thomas HALSTEAD was a Wesleyan Minister. It appears that James spent quite some time in South Africa between 1903 and 1924 and Andrew is very lucky in having access to his appointment diaries that he kept from 1900-1966! and which still exist.

The tree has been extensively updated and the additional research has meant that we have been able to amalgamate a number of trees and as such a new chart 16 has been created.

This new chart and the other information will be included in the next website update.

Halsted link to actor Rubert Everett

Many will have been watching the latest series of the popular Who Do You Think You Are UK Television series. The episode on the 29th July 2010 featured actor Rupert Everett.

I was contacted recently by friend and professional genealogist Roy Stockdill who had decided to delve further into Rupert family than the program had. His email said

"However, in the course of tracing as many of his lines as I could I discovered that one of his gt-gt-grandmothers was CAROLINE ARTINDALE of Habergham Eaves, born in 1849, daughter of Robert and Charlotte Artindale. Robert Artindale, b circa 1802, was a clerk to the magistrates at Burnley.

To my surprise, in Googling Robert, I found the family on your Halstead one-name site. Caroline married a barrister called Edmund Salwey Ford at Burnley RD in 1869. Their daughter Frances Mary Ford married an army captain, William Geoffrey Vyvyan, in 1904, and their daughter, the unusually-named OPRE VYVYAN, married Vice- Admiral Sir Hector MacLean and they were Rupert Everett's maternal grandparents."

Now this is where it starts to get a little complicated!

The youngest child of Robert ARTINDALE and Charlotte was Edward Jameson ARTINDALE. Edwards wife was Ellen Vere EVERY-CLAYTON or EVERY-HALSTED. The parents of Ellen Vere were Edward EVERY-CLAYTON and Eliza HOLGATE. Eliza HOLGATE changed her name by Deed Poll to HALSTED in order to inherit.

Ellen Vere EVERY-CLAYTON had a brother Charles Edward EVERY-HALSTED and sisters Harriot Ann and Amelia Jane Elizabeth. Harriot Ann EVERY-CLAYTON married John Todd ATKINSON in 1885 and their granddaughter Mary Louise HURST married Raymond LEWIS-JONES (the benefactor of the Halsted Trust). Interestingly Amelia EVERY-CLAYTON married Thomas Henry BAIRNSFATHER and their son Bruce BAIRNSFATHER was the creator of the "Old Bill" character from WW1.

The descendants of Ada Halstead (1876-1961)

I have been contacted by Gill Gorman because I have her grandmother Ada Halstead (1876-1961) assigned to the wrong parents. She says

"Ada was not, as appears on the site, the daughter of James Atkinson and Olive Halstead. She was the daughter of Olive’s sister, Ruth (1856-1880), and was born to Ruth and John Higson, two years before their marriage on 5 September 1878. Ruth died on 24 August 1880. You have mentioned that Ada appears on the 1881 aged 4, living with her grandfather Matthew Higson, and in the same house you will also find Matthew’s son and Ada’s father, widower John Higson. John married again in 1883 and moved to Yorkshire, leaving his daughter with her aunt Olive Halstead and her husband James Atkinson, who brought her up."

This in someways is a lesson in never assume things from the census and get the brith certificate if in doubt.

The master database has been corrected and tidied up for this family and the details will appear in the next website update.

The descendants of Joseph Halstead (1804-1876) and Mary ? (1805-1873)

I have been looking at the descendants of Joseph Halstead (1804-1876) born Sowerby, Yorkshire and his wife Mary ? (1805-1873) born Soyland, Yorkshire.

John and Elizabeth appear to have married prior to 1826 but I am not sure yet as to where. They appear to have had seven children

William Halstead (1826-1890) married Sarah Berry
John Halstead (1826-?) he appears on the 1841 census but no trace of him after
Rachel Wilson Halstead (1828-?) married Joseph Walsh
Hiram Halstead (1829-1901) married Leah Riley
Sarah Halstead (1832-?) married John Howe
George Halstead (1834-1876) married Grace Hollas
Susey Halstead (1836-1849)

In re-constructing this family a number of groups of individuals have been merged and the resulting family group with appear as a new Yorkshire Chart-14.
All the changes will appear in the next website update

I have been looking at the descendants of John Halstead (1790-1869) born Thornhill, Yorkshire and his wife Elizabeth ? (1787-1871) born Flockton, Yorkshire.

John and Elizabeth appear to have married prior to 1816 but I am not sure yet as to where. They appear to have had five children

Ezra Halstead (1829-1858) never married
John Halstead (1831-26 August 1890) married Elizabeth Ramsden

The descendants of Benjamin Halstead (1832-1878) and Frances Holt (1833-1864)

Whilst investigating the tree of Robert Halstead (1783-1853) (see blog The descendants of Robert Halstead (1783-1853) and Margaret ? (1792-1835)) I found another instance to two separate Halstead tree having a link only by marriage similar to that posted in that blog.

In this instance I noticed that Roberts' great-grandson Rowden Halstead (1888-1918) had married Sarah Jane Ashworth (1886-) in 1915. Following the death of Rowden in Egypt in 1918 Sarah Jane went on to marry Thomas Tattersall in 1923. As far as I can tell Rowden and Sarah had no children.

It transpires that Sarah's parents were Henry Ashworth and Sarah Ann Halstead. Sarah Ann Halstead being the daughter of Benjamin Halstead (1832-1878) and Frances Holt (1833-1864). Benjamin and Frances married in 1854 and had fivechildren

One of the biggest problems facing anyone with a large one-name study is the problem of trying to link the families together. This can take many years to achive and is something that is happening with the Halsted/Halstead study.

I started a couple of days ago to look at the decscendants of Robert Halstead (1783-1853) who it turns out was married to a Margaret (1792-1835) sometime before 1815. They had 8 children that I know of between 1815 and 1833. Of these all but William appear in the current online database - by using the parish records for Colne, Lancashire I have been able to add William to the list. I an currently trying to find out what happened to Richard

William Halstead (1819-1868) who married Sarah (1815-1891)
Grace Halstead (1821-?) who married George Eastwood
Martha Halstead (1823-?) who married William Howgill

The tree contains over 80 people and a new Lancashire Chart-11 has been created and will appear in the next website update

The descendants of John HALSTED (1778-1812) and Sarah SMITH (1779-1872)

I have recently been coresponding with Rennie Halstead regarding his grandparents Fred Halstead and Mabel Hirst and he has provided some more information on them which will appear in the next website update.

Rennie's family is part of Lancashire Chart-04 of which the progenitors are John HALSTED (1778-1812) and Sarah SMITH (1779-1872).

The opportunity has been taken to update the whole of this chart and in doing so it was found that John and Sarah's Great Granddaughter Anna HALSTEAD married a James POLLARD. James POLLARD is descended from another HALSTEAD line that doesn't currently have a chart. He is son of William POLLARD and Dorothy HALSTEAD. Dorothy's father James HALSTEAD will form the basis of a new Chart-10 that will appear on the next website update.

In researching some of the notes on file it is possible that the tree of John HALSTEAD (1778-1812) could be taken back several generations but it needs to be proved before I will add it to the database - watch this space.

Marriages of Robert Halstead b. 1839 Briercliffe d.1912 Briercliffe

Just before Easter I took the opportunity of ordering a large number of birth and marriage certificates to help try and resolve some of the anomalies in the Halstead study. The first of these certificates finally arrived yesterday after 3 weeks.

I have all of the birth, marriage and deaths from the GRO indexes as well as all the details from the Lancashire BMD project but even with these it is often difficult to work out who married who. This becomes especially difficult with some of the common pairings like Robert and Mary.

This update relates to the marriages of Robert Halstead, the son of Robert Halstead (1798-1846) and Tabitha Taylor (1799-1871).

Robert married Ellen Proctor on 30 October 1858 in St James, Briercliffe, Lancashire and they had two children

Tabitha Halstead (1871-)

Ellen died on 17 Aug 1874 at the age of 38.

The census records then had Robert married to a second Ellen, Ellen Clough (1848-1905) this time, on 16 April 1878 at Haggate Chapel. They had four children according to the census returns

There was a marriage in 1874 in the indexes that I couldn't place and this is the certificate that arrived.

This showed that in fact Robert had married for a third time! He married Mary Whitehead, a 32 year old spinster, on 8 October 1874 at the Registry Office in Burnley. He was a 36 year old widower.

Mary died in the third quarter of 1877 at the age of 35 apparently without issue. It is always possible that she died in childbirth.

Descendants of Francis and Esther Eves Halsted née Coles

Recent correspondence with Lorraine Wood, in Canada, has meant that one of Francis's children John Henry Halsted has now been correctly relocated to him rather than his sister Martha.

The error occured because Esther Eves Halsted died shortly after the 1841 census leaving Francis with three young children. In fact in the 1841 census John Henry was already living with his Uncle Charles Coles Halsted - John stayed with his uncle until he died in 1866 and was joined from the 1851 census onwards by his sister Esther Halsted.

This family form part of the Sussex Chart 2 and the information will be included in the next website update.

This latest update to the website www.halstedresearch.org.uk on Halstead, Halsted and Holstead research contains many updates - primarily to tidy up some of the material that is already there.

As with any large surname project like this there are always going to people that you can't link into one of the main trees and slowly these are being amalgamated. If you find someone in one of these smaller trees and have more information then pleae get in touch.

Lancashire Charts 9

This information relates to one of the Lancashire trees - the descendants of Christopher ALSTEAD and Mary MARSDEN.

Following a recent enquiry from the Rev David Halstead whose ancestors were John HALSTEAD b1814 and Alice BEARDSWORTH b1820 means that this tree has been checked and been extensively revised. This chart is not helped by the constant changing of names from HALSTEAD to ALSTEAD, ALSTON and even in the case of David's ancestors in 1851 of AUSTIN. We have been able to take the data a further two generations.

A new copy of the chart and the underlying data will be included in the next website update

Work has just been completed on the descendants of Isaac HALSTED born before 1785 and his wife Sarah, who form the start of the Essex Chart

This chart includes a number of HALSTEADs who went to Australia in the 1860s.

Website Update - 1911 Census

This latest update to the website http://www.halsteadresearch.org.uk/ contains the details of the remaining people from the 1911 Census of England and Wales. In total approximately 3,900 entries have been added in some 1,200 family groups or as individuals.

Work has started on looking at tidying up some of the existing tress and trying to merge them together.

It had been indented to start on the birth, marriage and death certificates that are held but the recent release of the Chelsea Pension records (The National Archives class WO96 and WO97) by FindMyPast http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ means they will be next and the certificates will have to wait a little longer.

The next planned website update will be the third weekend in April but in the meantime if you find any errors or problems please let me know

Website update - 1911 census

This latest update to the website www.halsteadresearch.org.uk contains the details of approximately another 1,000 people from the 1911 census of England and Wales.

This now leaves just 850 entries of the 4,000 still to be added. However these are contained in just the two registration districts of Burnley and Halifax. It is hoped that these can be completed by the time of the next update which is scheduled for the third weekend in March.

After that is is hoped to add many of the birth, marriage and death certificates that are held.

Halste(a)d One-Name Study

This is the first posting of this blog to help promote the website http://www.halstedresearch.org.uk/ on research into the HALSTED, HALSTEAD and HOLSTEAD names together with its variants.

The name has many roots and the aim of the site, which is the research part of the Halsted Trust http://www.halsted.org.uk/ (a registered educational charity with the purpose of promoting one-name study research and in particular research into the Halste(a)d name), is to publish some of the data that we hold.

Currently about half of the 4,000 entries for the 1911 census are included in the site and over the next few months the aim is to add the remainder, as well as adding details of many of the birth, marriage and death certificates that I hold.

I will be happy to correspond with anyone who has an interest in the name and especially those who can provide additional information. The website does not knowingly contain information on living people so if you aren't there don't worry, you can still contact me via the main site or at halsted@one-name.org
